How to Build Max-Performance Ford FE Engines Paperback – June 2, 2010
Purchase options and add-ons
With the high-performance revival for FE engines, a variety of builds are being performed from stock blocks with mild head and cam work to complete aftermarket engines with aluminum blocks, high-flow heads, and aggressive roller cams. How to Build Max-Performance Ford FE Engines shows you how to select the ideal pistons, connecting rods, and crankshafts to achieve horsepower requirements for all applications. The chapter on blocks discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each particular block considered. The book also examines head, valvetrain, and cam options that are best suited for individual performance goals. Also covered are the best-flowing heads, rocker-arm options, lifters, and pushrods. In addition, this volume covers port sizing, cam lift, and the best rocker-arm geometry.
The FE engines are an excellent platform for stroking, and this book provides an insightful, easy-to-follow approach for selecting the right crank, connecting rods, pistons, and making the necessary block modifications. This is the book that Ford FE fans have been looking for.

Engine BlocksSome scratches were done by hand as an identification method in the foundry, and often look “backward” or crudely formed. They sometimes can provide a means of identification although many marks were randomly used and don’t provide any actual ID information. A “C” scratch on back of a 428 is considered a good indication of a Cobra Jet block, when combined with date codes in the 1969–1970 timeframe. |
Cranks and RodsScat offers 4340 chromoly H-beam rods as standard dimension replacements for the FE, as well as the longer Chevy big-block based stroker parts. These come with ARP 8740 capscrew fasteners. The ARP 2000 bolts are an option for improved clamping force on high-RPM engines. |
PistonsThis FE domed piston features a ceramic coating on top, which withstands greater combustion temperatures, so the tuner can run air/fuel mixture leaner while maintaining reliability. The skirt is moly coated for increased lubrication and reduced friction and enhanced scuff resistance. |

This 428 FE engine is dressed out for street use in a 1966 7-liter Galaxie. The 428 featured an externally balanced, cast-nodular-iron crankshaft. Because of longer stroke, hydraulic lifters, and reduced compression ratio, the 428 was much more streetable than the 427. Affordable 428 FE engine blocks are a rarity these days. If you see one at a swap meet or on an online auction site, you need to check inside the water jackets as well as the casting numbers to confirm that it is indeed a 428. Some unscrupulous sellers have overbored 390s and tried to pass them off as 428s.

Cylinder HeadsThis particular high performance head, the C0AE-D, was fitted to early high performance 352s. Note the unique machined heart-shaped combustion chamber. Ford continued to machine chambers during the 427 era, but the heart-shaped concept was largely abandoned for many years. Current race heads have a chamber that, while far more sophisticated, is eerily reminiscent of the old 352 parts. |
Intake ManifoldsThis is the rear view of the Dove high-riser and medium-riser Tunnel Wedge intakes. While similar in design, the difference in plenum size and height can be seen when the intakes are set alongside each other. |
Fuel SystemsHere is an assembled 2x4 carb package showing the passenger side with the fuel log, as well as the S-shaped rear breather needed to clear the intake. |

Included are many many photographs to help clarify the issues. Again, this is an excellent book for a slightly experienced builder or even a professional engine builder who hasn't built an FE engine for awhile. Money well spent for anyone.
A great book written by someone who knows the Ford FE big block inside and out.
